CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Spill what? Why would I spill tea? We didn’t even order any tea.” Dottie stared blankly at Charr.

“She means to say that you should tell us everything.” Makana smothered a laugh into her napkin.

“Oh! That’s a funny expression!” Dottie laughed. “Well, yesterday evening, Mama and Papa were acting awfully strange. They were just plain moody and really not themselves. Plus, they sent me to bed early, which I swear they never do!” She shook her head as if she was still surprised about it.

“So I just had to know what was going on! I snuck to the top of the stairs to listen, and that’s when I overheard them. They were going on and on about how two of the assets had gone missing from their worlds and how headquarters was upset. They said that one of the pair of agents was already down, and the other set was still in pursuit,” Dottie said.

“Did they say anything else about the agents that were down? Anything about what happened to the woman?” Charr asked, unable to hide the urgency in her voice.

Dottie cocked her head thoughtfully. After a moment, she said, “No, I don’t think they did. They just said that the agents from this Rensha place—”

“Renshu,” Makana corrected her.

“Oh, excuse me! The agents from this Renshu place were down. I’m sorry, but they didn’t say anything else.”

“She’s concerned her mom’s in trouble for helping us. When one of our parents dies their consciousness leaves the body they have now and goes into their original body, the ones they had when they volunteered for the program,” Makana explained.

“Oh.” Dottie paused and tapped her cheek thoughtfully. “But that won’t happen to us when we die, will it?”

“No, because these are our original bodies. We haven’t had our consciousnesses transferred, or a consciousness transferred to these bodies. Not yet,” Charr explained.

Dottie let out an excited gasp, making Makana jump again.

“Here you go.” The waitress set down their plates of food.

“Thank you.” Makana snatched up her burger to land a massive bite.

“You’re taking this whole multiple worlds thing well,” Charr said.

Makana let out a happy sigh, her cheeks stuffed with cheesy goodness. Her stomach was still growling. It felt like she hadn’t eaten in years.

“Don’t be silly! I already knew about the multiple worlds and the whole mission thing.” Dottie waved it off. “It all seemed a little obvious, so I figured it out years ago. Didn’t you?” She looked between them.

Makana and Charr fell into an awkward silence that stretched on unbearably until Makana admitted, “Uh, no.”

Dottie pursed her lips. “Oh. Well, it always seemed a little odd that I was being trained. It’s not like it’s a normal activity to have your daughter learning how to fire a gun on a Friday night instead of just learning how to crochet.” Her eyes opened wide in horror. “Oh, not to say that I don’t know how to crochet, of course! I was taught that as well as the normal household chores! Mending, sewing, gardening, and all that jazz.
